Mining Now partnered with Micromine to produce an exclusive panel session to kick off activities in their Momentum event for the Americas. The panel discusses the mining industry’s changes and challenges when it comes to technology, what they expect in the future, and really what “next-generation technology for mining” means to them.

Geologists are collecting more than ever! A key topic in mining is the process for data collection is changing – such as the instruments used (e.g. measurement). This is especially apparent for data collection in the field, such as drones, the collection of imagery, and 3D modeling. This has resulted in an explosion in the amount of data that is being collected so we discuss both the consolidation of tools and the demand for data that is centralized and real-time.

Another key area of importance is the developing geologists that still have the core skills as technology continues to evolve. We can now collect data easily, but the people using the data need fundamental skills along with the ability to operate the new technology gathering it. This can be a challenge for veterans in the industry but is also a method to attract the next generation to the geology and mining sector.

Connectivity is a third important pillar with the use of cloud storage presenting a whole new challenge. Cloud storage may become more of an option for Geologists with the introduction of services such as Starlink. However, currently, you can’t go too far North with Starlink. It can cost around 20 to 30k for the internet and a geologist may have terabytes of data to load in camp. The challenges with cloud and internet on camp conflict with the push for “real-time” data. It’s not achievable currently. Products such as Micromine’s dongles can provide an alternative for remote operations.
