Clean Resource Innovation Network is contributing to a future in which Canada is a global leader in producing clean hydrocarbon energy from source to end use. They are a pan-Canadian network focused on ensuring Canada’s energy resources can be sustainably developed and integrated into the global energy supply. By identifying industry challenges, CRIN creates a market pull to accelerate commercialization and wide spread clean technology adoption by bringing together industries, entrepreneurs, investors, academia, governments, and many others.
Joy Romero joins Jerrod Downey to discuss her career, CRIN and Canada’s place in the global energy sector. Joy is both the VP of Technology and Innovation at Canadian Natural Resources and President at Clean Resource Innovation Network. She discusses the evolution of her career that began as a young girl with her father working the mining sector, to getting her own start working as an engineer in iron ore and coal mining. In 2001, she joined Canadian Natural Resources to steward the development, commissioning and operation of bitumen production within the Horizon Oil Sands Project.
Being with Canadian Natural over 20 years Joy has seen the Horizon Oil Sands achieve 35% emissions reduction from 2012 to 2020 and has been part of helping the industry tackle the “Too Hard Pile” by finding new technology to reduce emissions. Part of that support comes from Federal funding of $100m to CRIN which supports research aimed at cutting energy GHG emissions.
